Subject: Building your library's music collection?
From: Pamela Bristah <pbristah_at_wellesley.edu>

The Music Library Association, in conjunction with ALA, published a
buying guide for exactly this situation, A Basic Music Library, 3rd
edition (ALA, 1997).

The recording-specific info in BML3 is now dated, but the repertoire cited
for classical music and the artists cited for pop, jazz, and world music
are still valid, and provide a good start.

Entries are prioritized, with those marked with two asterisks being the
most essential, and those marked with one asterisk being a little more
comprehensive.

You could also look at online options such as collections offered by
Alexander Street Press-- Classical Music Library, Contemporary World
Music (i.e., global pop), and others-- and Naxos Music Library
(classical) and Naxos Music Library Jazz.
