We were in a similar boat at the University of North Dakota, but I
wasn't even allowed to keep any funds for the library if we sold the
books. We could do a book sale, after posting to various lists, under
our state law. We probably could have negotiated with BWB too. But
as I would have had to give every penny to the university's general
fund, and it would have been a TON of extra work for my staff, it
simply was not worth it. We listed books that we were considering
discarding on a spreadsheet that was updated weekly and posted on our
website, and also emailed to faculty who asked for delivery to their
inbox. Faculty could request the book for themselves, as long as they
kept it in their office or otherwise on UND property, and didn't take
it home. Otherwise, the books were discarded. Many, many were
multiple duplicates, or ancient editions of outdated computer science
books, etc. We did get some push back, but mostly it worked out, and
university admin very much supported us. It was our first weeding
ever - since the university was established in the 1880s. I'm happy
to discuss it with anyone who is interested.
