Collections in Public Libraries: Issues, Trends, Forecasts, and Best Practices -Call for Chapters
ALCTS Monographs is seeking chapter proposals covering any one or more of the topics listed below for publication of a new monograph that will delve into collection trends, issues, and forecasts for public libraries with an eye toward recording current best practices.
Summary: Collections in public libraries have been under massive transformations with the proliferation of new formats such as e-books, streaming media, and zines, along with collecting new materials such as games, and household items. New methods of sharing resources have been implemented such as floating collections or state-wide resource sharing. At the same time, collecting print books, DVDs, and periodicals has remained consistent. What are the current issues, trends, and forecasts impacting collection development in public libraries? Are there emerging best practices?
Intended Audience: Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarians in public libraries; public library Administrators and Directors; MLIS Professors who teach on Collection Development topics.
Chapter length: 2,000-4,000 words (Approx. 4-8 pages)
Proposed topics/chapters:

*         Shared/collaborative collection development. Could include:

o   Working with academic, school, state, and/or special libraries in the community

o   Floating collections

o   Consortial collection development

o   Collaborating with branch staff

*         Collecting for your community. Could include:

o   Diversity in collections

o   Foreign-language popular literature

o   Family-oriented collections

o   Patron driven acquisitions

o   Accepting gifts

o   Censorship issues

*         Collecting various formats. Could include:

o   Zines

o   Graphic novels

o   E-content

o   Realia (e.g. tools, equipment, cake pans, fitness kits, instruments)

o   E-readers

o   Games

o   Playaway Launchpads

*         Selection. Could include:

o   Tools

o   Processes

o   Criteria

o   Vendors

*         Budgeting. Could include:

o   Fundraising

o   Grant writing

*         Acquisitions. Could include:

o   EDI ordering and invoicing

o   Licensing and negotiation

o   Outsourcing cataloging and processing

o   Monitoring health of vendors

o   Vendor relationships

o   Processes

*         Collection maintenance. Could include:

o   Deselection best practices

o   Assessment

*         Marketing your collection. Could include:

o   Physical arrangement and display

o   Genres

o   Juvenile series

o   Neighborhoods

o   Use of library's discovery layer/website
