Jane,

Academe generally refers to them as graphic novels if they are in book
form. It's definitely a literary genre, and there are genre headings for
"Comics (Graphic works)" as well as "Graphic novels. " We started a
collection about 10 years ago to support a faculty member who teaches the
genre in one of his English classes. (We also thought our graphic design
students would be interested in the artwork, but that has not been the
case.)
Now that we have a core collection of about 300 graphic novels, we don't
add much to the collection. I look for award-winners (e.g. Eisner awards)
and avoid books in seemingly limitless series. The books are classified
together in PN67XX to facilitate browsing, and they circulate. Our
collection includes mostly graphic novels themselves, but also literary
criticism about graphic novels in general.
