The Pepperdine University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for
a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, and adaptable administrator to fill
the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Collections,
Technical Services and Scholarly Communication.

*Our Mission*
The Pepperdine Libraries provide a global gateway to knowledge. At the
academic heart of our educational environment, our libraries are
sanctuaries for study, learning, and research, encouraging discovery,
contemplation, social discourse and creative expression. As the information
universe continues to evolve, our goal is to remain responsive to users’
needs by providing seamless access to both print and digital resources
essential for learning, teaching and research.
*Our Resources*
The Pepperdine Libraries provides access to more than 1,100,156 items which
includes 377,955 volumes, 358,366 electronic books, 36,656 print and
electronic journals, and 109,960 physical and electronic media items. The
Library provides services to nearly 7,826 students and 678 faculty located
in multiple locations in and around Los Angeles and internationally.
The Boone Special Collections and Archives at Pepperdine University holds
10,600 rare books and 140 processed collections. The department’s
collections are stored in an NEH grant-funded sustainable preservation and
storage system, many of which are accessible to the public online through
the Pepperdine Digital Collections. Pepperdine’s digital offerings include
historic photography collections, digitized archival materials, and a
wealth of scholarly material published on the Libraries’ digital publish
platform, Digital Commons @ Pepperdine.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 75 library
personnel comprised of 17 librarians, 19 support personnel, and 39 library
student workers who are committed to providing excellent service to
Pepperdine’s scholarly community.
*Location*
Located in beautiful, coastal Malibu, California, Pepperdine University is

is home to Seaver College, the Pepperdine School of Law, the Pepperdine
Graziadio Business School, the Pepperdine School of Public Policy and the
Pepperdine Graduate School of Education and Psychology. Three libraries on
the Malibu campus (Payson, Harnish Law and the Drescher Campus Library)
serve these schools. Nine additional libraries serve Pepperdine’s graduate
campuses located around the greater Los Angeles area and international
programs of study located in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the AUL for Collections, Technical
Services and Scholarly Communication will serve as a member of the Dean’s
Leadership Team, which consists of the Dean of Libraries; the Director for
Administration, Finance and Operations; the AUL for Special Collections and
University Archives; the AUL for Public Services and Programming; and the
Director for Library Programming and Public Affairs. As part of this team,
the AUL for Collections, Technical Services and Scholarly Communication is
expected to participate actively in strategic conversations spanning areas
of library operations, thinking broadly and collaboratively to produce
initiatives that support student learning, faculty teaching, and research;
increase operational effectiveness; and achieve alignment with University
goals and objectives.
*Duties*
- Supervise Technical Services librarians and staff in the areas of
acquisitions, cataloging, collections management/maintenance, selection of
scholarly materials, a subject liaison program, procurement, and management
of organizational statistics and data reporting.
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the planning, design,
implementation, and operation of technical services and systems, including
the Libraries’ cloud-based online catalog and its component parts; web and
access systems, digitization lab software; and the core server, database,
storage, backup and web infrastructure.
- Lead department staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, staff
development; promotion, mentoring, performance evaluation and management;
and fostering a motivated and engaged work environment.
- Oversee management of the library’s strategic budgeting process.
- Work closely with community partners, staff, faculty, and campus
departments on projects that support the University’s strategic objectives.
- Serve as needed as the Libraries’ representative on university
committees.
- Represent the Libraries and provides leadership in local, regional,
and national forums, such as ALA, CRL, ACRL, CNI, and other professional
organizational venues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

*Skills and Qualifications*
Required: Master’s degree in library and/or information science or
equivalent. Minimum of five to seven years of experience managing a
department or significant program related to technical services and
collections in an academic institution, or other applicable experience.
Excellent organizational skills, a proven ability to plan and carry out
projects in a timely manner, understanding of budgets including expenditure
tracking and allocation processes. Progressively responsible management and
supervisory experience in an academic library or in higher
education.Experience managing budgets, including developing spending plans.
Demonstrated commitment and ability to engage others in collaborative
planning and delivery of user-centered services. Excellent leadership,
communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills. Demonstrated
experience with program development and collaboration. Technology skills
and experience with its application and maintenance in an academic/research
library setting. Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated sound judgment, broad perspective, and emotional intelligence.
Demonstrated record of professional achievement.
Preferred: Second master’s degree. Familiarity with metadata, linked data,
and classification schema. Familiarity with ILS systems, server and
cloud-based systems, emergent discovery tools, and IIIF.
Qualified individuals should be able to articulate a strong commitment to

different backgrounds.

This is a librarian, exempt, 40 hour per week position.
