Collections Strategist

The University of Virginia Library seeks a Collections Strategist to lead
collaborative efforts to manage existing collections, with an initial
concentration on the circulating and reference print collections, through deep
understanding of the collection subject matter and usage. The position's
primary activities will involve planning, implementing and documenting a
holistic vision for collections that exist in a complex ecosystem across
multiple formats, platforms, languages, and buildings, including a nearby high
density storage facility. The incumbent will determine recommendations for the
appropriate balance of materials in various library locations through analysis
of print and electronic collections, create and maintain policies and
procedures for collections evaluations and relocation, and coordinate the
placement of print periodicals. The Collections Strategist will possess the
ability to assess collections at a granular, disciplinary level and apply this
assessment to a well-balanced process of materials transfers among libraries
as well as deselection of materials. Collaborating with colleagues across
multiple buildings and areas of expertise, the incumbent will utilize
excellent interpersonal and communication skills to ensure that all
stakeholders are consulted in advance of decision making and that decisions
are communicated widely.
Qualifications:
A Master's Degree in Library Science or related field is required, at least 7
years of previous experience in collections may be considered in lieu of a
degree. Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills are essential. Applicants must be able to work collegially and
cooperatively with a diverse organization. Strong conceptual and analytical
skills are imperative. Applicants must demonstrate initiative and the ability
to encourage others to work cooperatively. General familiarity with the
functions of Integrated Library System (ILS) applications is required.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Master's in Library Science and
at least 3 years of work experience with collections in an academic library.
Experience working with and managing print-focused collections in the
humanities and social sciences is preferred. Experience in applying analytical
skills and methodologies to collections evaluation and management is highly
