The ALCTS Collection Management Section invites you to CMS Forum: Developing Collections in a Dynamic World: A Discussion of Changing Ideas, Roles and Organizational Structures.
The session will take place on Sunday, Jan 27, from 4-5 pm at the Grand Hyatt Seattle hotel, Princessa I.

Session description: Reorganizations and redefinitions across roles in collection development and technical services is a developing trend in librarianship. These changes affect collection development roles and responsibilities within the library as a whole. The speakers in this forum will present their perspective on organizational change and rethinking models of collection development in practical contexts.

Program:

Merging and Moving at the MSU Library
Rachelle McLain, Interim Collection Development Librarian, Montana State University

This talk discusses how a newly merged department (CATS) of catalogers and collection development staff reacted to news that a portion of the library's physical collections would move offsite in Summer 2019. Hear how CATS is dealing with their recent organizational change and how they are beginning to tackle their upcoming common library challenges: weeding and offsite storage.

Changing Trends, Changing Minds
Alison M. Armstrong, Collection Management Librarian, Radford University

Flat budgets, liaison turnovers, and new purchase options. How an academic library's Collection Development Committee used a "retreat" to get together in order to discuss and, eventually, embrace change setting them up for immediate change and more gradual shifts in the future.

Restructuring technical services and collection development to meet user needs and improve return on investment in an academic library
Michael Arthur, Department Head, Resource Acquisition & Discovery, University Libraries, The University of Alabama

This presentation highlights dramatic changes in collection development and the role of technical services in a large academic library. The changes follow a thorough review of technical services operations. Changes include a new liaison program, a shift to demand driven acquisitions, and a data driven collection strategy.
