*Graphic Novels: Selecting, Acquiring, and Cataloging Nuts and Bolts for
Libraries*
Graphic Novels are in high demand but come with numerous challenges for
libraries. Selection, acquisition and cataloging of graphic novels is
difficult requiring in depth knowledge to navigate available publishers and
decipher series. While graphic novels for young adults, and adults have
been around for a while, emerging areas include graphic novels covering
contemporary social issues, graphic novels in medicine, and international
comics. Additional trends include non-fiction graphic memoirs, and web
comics becoming books. Having insider tips and information can help any
library build and catalog a strong, relevant graphic novel collection.
ALCTS Monographs is seeking chapter submissions covering any one or more of
the topics listed below for publication in a monograph covering the “nuts
and bolts” of selection, acquisition, and cataloging of graphic novels.
Chapters will provide a brief overview with a focus on issues, tips, and
tools to aid in the selection, acquisition, management, and discovery of
graphic novels in a library collection.
If you would like to contribute to this monograph, please send a brief
abstract and outline for the topic/chapter you would like to write about to
John Ballestro, jballestro_at_library.tamu.edu, by December 1, 2018. Please
