The Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Libraries  invite applicants for the Librarian, Collections position.  This position works at a supervisory level with the staff and the ILS/ALC (Alaska Library Catalog, shared consortium catalog) in the Collection Services Division which includes acquisitions, selection, processing, cataloging, ILL, and mail and delivery services.

POSITION TITLE:                           Librarian, Collections
STATUS:                                          Regular Full Time
SALARY:                                         17A $33.72/hr.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Coordinates the provision of acquisition and processing services.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
1.      Interview and recommend hiring of staff. Coordinate, provide, and supervise ongoing training of staff; participate in oral counseling and provide input for disciplinary action. Coordinate staff scheduling.
2.      Formulate goals and objectives; monitor the budgets for the section; evaluate acquisition and processing policies and procedures, and write/implement changes as necessary.
3.      Manage overall integrity of the bibliographic records for the library within confines of the ALC (Alaska Library Catalog).
4.      Manage overall functions of Interlibrary Loan (ILL), monitor ILL software, and implement changes when warranted.
5.      Evaluate features and functionality of automated acquisitions, serials, continuations, and processing systems, and pursue enhancements as warranted.
6.      Select material in assigned areas of collection; participate in professional meetings.
7.      Provide public assistance at the reference desk and elsewhere as required.
8.      Prepare instructional aids and provide instruction for staff on cataloging, acquisitions, and serial software. Serve as liaison with ALC library staff.
9.      Supervise the mailing and delivery services for the library.
10.    Participate in professional activities and serve as Librarian-in-charge during evening and weekend duty and as needed in emergency situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.      Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university/college.
2.      Three years of recent experience as a professional librarian of which one year must have been at a supervisory level.
3.      Experience in effective communication, both written and orally, with co-workers and public.
4.      Experience in a consortium environment preferred.
5.      Technical experience with Integrated Library Systems, bibliographic database systems (OCLC, etc.), the LC classification system, AACR2, and MARC tagging preferred.
6.      Familiarity with public library practices and procedures.
7.      Experience with personal computers, automated library systems, and audiovisual equipment.
8.      Experience in the use of automated library materials and knowledge of selection trends and issues.
9.      PREFERRED: Ability to have and maintain a valid driver's license and to meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUESTED AT TIME OF HIRE.)

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervisor responsibilities: participates in new hire interviews, provides input for employee evaluations, and other applicable employee-related actions; experiences minor problems daily and occasional major ones that must be resolved with minimal supervision; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require significant effort to recover.
For the purpose of this job description, "supervisor" means providing technical work direction and oversight.  It does not include the ability to employ, promote, transfer, evaluate performance, discipline, suspend, discharge or adjudicate grievances; those are management responsibilities handled by the manager/director level.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Private/general office where conditions are pleasant; when in the field, there are minor health hazards and accident probability; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.).
