The accreditations I’ve worked on (nursing, medical residency programs, social work programs) have never looked for specific titles, but have had language like “materials and resources to adequately support the program or curriculum” and it was on the library to show that what we owned/subscribed to was in fact “adequate” – now how specific accreditors/site visitors chose to interpret that might be another matter – if the library did not subscribe to their “favorite” journal, it might raise an eyebrow, but we generally erred on the side of showing high percentage of compliance with recognized core title lists (Like Doody’s) rather than enumerating each and every title. I recall in my serials librarianship class some 30+ years ago the professor explained to us that Elsevier (and maybe others) found specific titles listed in accreditation requirements then targeted those titles for acquisition. We know what came next. I have not seen any evidence as to the reason for not listing specific titles but I do know from having to review WASC accreditation requirements in my previous job that specific titles no longer appear in those requirements (if they ever did). I suggest a possible reason for not listing specific titles anymore comes from this history. If anyone has served on any of the committees in an accreditation body or has any additional information in support of this hypothesis I would be interested to hear about it. I'd like to know which accrediting bodies list titles to which a library must subscribe. One that I've found is the American Chemical Society's Guidelines and Evaluation Procedures for Bachelors Degree Programs which states: "An approved program must provide immediate institutional access to no fewer than 14 current and archival, peer-reviewed journals whose subject matter spans the chemical sciences. At least three of the journals must have a general focus (for example, Science, JACS, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Chemistry – A European Journal, Chemical Communications, etc.), and at least one must come from each area of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemistry education." Has anyone else come across language that is this specific?
