Hi, everyone –

Thanks very much to all who responded to my one-question survey (“Does your library collect and circulate music recordings on vinyl, or only on compact disc?“) a couple of weeks ago. The results were very interesting, and since several respondents asked me to share my findings, I’m doing so now.

- I had 66 responses in total: 54 from academic libraries, and 12 from public libraries.

- Of the academic libraries, 31 reported that they do not collect vinyl at all; 15 reported that they collect vinyl occasionally; 8 reported that they collect vinyl regularly.

- Of the public libraries, 9 said they never collect vinyl; 2 said they collect it occasionally; none said that they collect vinyl regularly, but one said that they are considering beginning to do so.

- Quite a few libraries said that although they don’t currently collect vinyl, they do have legacy vinyl collections, and some reported that these circulate but most said they do not.

In light of these findings, I plan to start covering vinyl-only releases in CD HotList on a selective basis. But I’m not going to change the name. :-)

Thanks again to all who responded!
Rick
