“Sudden Position” Guide Series

ALCTS Monographs seeks proposals, as well as potential authors, for a new
“Sudden Position” series.

*Description:* If you find yourself suddenly taking on a new role in a
collections or technical services position, what do you need to know to get
going?   The series of guides will provide the information, tools, and
resources necessary to help you take on a new or unfamiliar role in
collections or technical services.  The guides will be similar in format
and length to the ALCTS Sudden Selector series (
http://www.ala.org/alcts/resources/collect/collmgt/ssg).

Topics might include the following, although suggestions and proposals for
guides for other positions are encouraged:

Sudden Acquisitions Position Guide
Sudden Collection Development Position Guide
Sudden Cataloging and Metadata Position Guide
Sudden Preservation Position Guide
Sudden Scholarly Communication Position Guide
Sudden Electronic Resources Position Guide

The exact format and contents will differ depending on the author and the
subject, but each guide would likely include:

-An introduction, including learning objectives for the guide or for each
chapter
-An overview of the discipline
-Common job responsibilities for positions in the field, and an overview of
“what you absolutely need to know” about each
-An overview of standards as applicable (laws, rules, procedures, best
practices)
-Relevant resources, including relevant professional organizations,
journals, listservs, websites
-Professional development and continuing education opportunities
-Recommended readings
