Boston College
Collection Development Librarian
Description
Following a year-long strategic and organizational planning process that coincided with retirements in several areas, the Boston College Libraries seek several highly collaborative professionals to provide leadership and direction for newly configured and innovative services.
The Libraries offer an agile and dynamic environment that encourages exploration of user-centered initiatives. Successful candidates will have an inherent desire to develop and assess services, and a demonstrated track record of successful implementation of strategies that enhance teaching, learning, research, and scholarship. This position, reporting to the Head of Collection Development and Research, has the opportunity to be a leader in developing the social science collections of a dynamic research university. He or she is part of a team of Collection Development Librarians who collaborate in projects aimed at meeting the challenges of collecting resources in the 21st century. As the Social Science Librarian in the Collection Development Group (within the Collection Development and Research Department), this position provides analysis and evaluation, and reports on the collection and expenditures for library materials in the social sciences. This librarian also serves as liaison to designated academic departments (Political Science or Education), and provides consultation, research support, outreach and instruction as needed for the faculty and students in those departments.
The Collection Development librarians oversee the management of Library resources in all formats, providing support to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Administrative Services. They also work collaboratively with the Metadata Management and Resource Acquisition Management Departments to maintain an effective and quickly responsive process for acquiring resources and making them easily available for discovery. Collection Development Librarians share the same responsibilities as their subject specialist colleagues but they also bring the big picture perspective to discussions and projects. All liaisons work closely with the Head of Scholarly Communication and Research, as well as with colleagues in the Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections, and the Digital Scholarship Services department.
The current liaison structure provides for considerable flexibility, with the expectation that there is a high level of proactive interaction and initiatives between faculty, students and the librarian. The University Libraries are focused on developing greater integration with academic departments where librarians are vital partners in the research process.
