It is interesting to hear about how this product is changing. The last time our Library looked at it was in 2014. At that time, it seemed much weaker than CAS. I too noted the inability to save sets of call number ranges which Karen Harker refers to in her message.

A month after we looked at it, OCLC announced its new relationship with Sustainable Collections Services (SCS). I'm looking forward to catching up on developments at the Charleston Conference next month, but I'd love to hear about others experiences in this forum too.

Subject: RE: [ALCTS-colldv] OCLC Collection Evaluation

We have been using CES (formerly CAS) for several years now. We mainly use it for collection assessment purposes. While there are limitations and caveats to using this system for that purpose, it still helps us understand how our collections compare with our peers.

The limitations are primarily in the quality of the data. First, there is the accuracy of the holdings as reflected in WorldShare. This applies not only to your own holdings, but those of the peers. For example, we have a history of not including many of our government documents collection in WorldCat. I am currently attempting to compare the holdings in our ILS with those reflected in WorldCat within randomly selected call number ranges. If there are systemic problems, we may be able to address these. But if the problems are random, then we will have to incorporate a certain amount of error in our assessments.

Secondly, there is the problem of matching. In my attempts to compare our ILS with WorldCat, I've noticed a number of titles that didn't match on the OCLC record number. So, I'm assuming there are other ways in which the holdings are matched in the CES, but I would very much appreciate more details from OCLC support on how this is done.

Finally, there is what I consider a much bigger problem with the interpretation of the results and the theoretical basis (or lack thereof) behind the comparisons provided: Benchmark and Overlap. Here is data from a recent assessment of our library & information science collection (which supports a prominent SLIS program):

* Benchmarking (where the denominator is the combined holdings of us and our peers (5))

o Of all holdings (no limits on format or call number range)

* 16% are unique to us

* 16% overlap (us with at least one peer)

* 68% are not held by us

o Of LIS books (print or electronic) only

* 31% are unique to us

*  18% overlap

* 51% are not held by us

What does this tell us about our collection? Why the difference? Does this reflect a "better" LIS collection than our peers?

There has been very little written about the measures themselves - most articles written about the CES/CAS have been about the system itself. That being said, I am seriously considering conducting a study to investigate these very questions, but this would require the inclusion of a wide variety of libraries with different areas of specialty, and thus, significant planning and collaboration with OCLC.

Finally, there is one feature that I would like to specifically mention (mainly to OCLC support, if they are listening). When CAS changed to CES (incorporating the WorldShare data platform), there were a number of features that were lost. Some of these have been restored, but there is one feature that is still not available and we have greatly missed: the ability to save sets of call number ranges. While you can relatively easily select the Conspectus subjects through the lists, there is no way to save the selected ranges to be used again. This is a feature I would greatly appreciate being restored.

Good morning,

Does your library subscribe to OCLC's Collection Evaluation? We had a demo this morning and I'd like to get impressions from others who actually own it and use it.

Thanks!
Alison
