HEAD OF ACQUISITIONS

The Alkek Library at Texas State University is seeking a creative, 
analytical and innovative leader to serve as Head of Acquisitions. 
Reporting to the Director of Collections and Digital Services, this 
individual will provide leadership and direction for the Acquisitions 
department of the Library, including monographic and continuing 
resources, supervision of operations for collection development of 
library materials; and providing advice and expertise on library 
acquisitions and materials budget allocation strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Administer Acquisitions Department operations 
effectively and efficiently. Update and streamline procedures as needed. 
Develop new Acquisitions initiatives. Represent the department in 
cross-departmental meetings and with advisory groups. Ensure 
departmental cooperation and build bridges with other library divisions 
and university departments. Train staff, provide feedback on 
performance, and identify opportunities for staff to participate in 
professional development activities. Oversee operations delegated to 
direct reports including collection development and management, ordering 
and receiving, licensing, continuing resources check-in and bindery. 
Manage acquisitions budgets, allocations and expenditures. Select and 
approve titles for the library general allocation. Work with assigned 
departments to encumber their library allocation. Coordinate library 
research grants and online resource grants annually. Maintain library 
system knowledge by keeping up with and researching library system 
enhancements, new products, technologies, and workflows. Engage in 
professional activities in accordance with Texas State Universitys 
standards for promotion for professional librarians.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Masters degree from an ALA accredited program; knowledge of 
library system modules for
acquisitions, continuing resources and electronic resource management; 
ability to analyze workflow and
procedures; ability to interpret state and local contracts and policies; 
knowledge of library
vendor/acquisitions practices; licensing and negotiation skills; 
knowledge of library collection development principles; intermediate to 
advanced computer skills (Excel); ability to generate and analyze 
reports from library systems and other spreadsheet data; knowledge of 
leadership and management principles and practices; ability to perform 
effectively in a team environment; supervisory skill; time management 
skills.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with qualifications and 
experience. Advancement in rank is available through the Librarian/ 
Curator Career Ladder. Available ranks include Assistant Librarian, 
Associate Librarian, Librarian and Senior Librarian. Benefits include 
monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement

Digital Services Division (comprised of Acquisitions, Cataloging and 
Metadata Services, and Digital and Web Services), focused on evolving 
services for the 21st Century.  The FY2014-2015 acquisitions budget is 
$6.8 million managed by a department staff of 14.  The University
