Position Title: Associate University Librarian for Collections Strategies
Reports to: Dean of Libraries/University Librarian
Job Summary: As one of the portfolio leaders, the Associate University
Librarian for Collections Strategies (AULCS) advances the librarys
mission and contributes to the achievement of library and university
strategic goals within a highly collaborative, user-focused, research
and learning environment.
Provides administrative oversight and support for these work groups:
Collection Development and Acquisitions
Preservation
Distinctive Collections
Has a strong leadership support relationship with Research and Learning
Services working group.
Key Responsibilities
Articulates a vision for the development of collections and
collection services in relation to the mission and strategic goals of
the university and the strategic plans of the library. Of particular
importance is the need to integrate distinctive collections into
undergraduate teaching and learning.
Plans, manages, and leads the librarys collection development
program in support of the Universitys strategic academic goals.
Identifies new areas and models for growth and investment, or reduction
and disinvestment, in response to changes in university curricula and
research programs. Accountable for the allocation and use of multiple
collections funds.
Identifies and helps deliver new means to apply and integrate
information researches in research.
Proposes methods for improving collection processing and
management services; identifies legacy services and operations to reduce
or curtail.
Provides strategic support on issues relating to acquisitions,
cataloging, preservation, serials control, electronic resource
management, collection analysis and collection space allocation.
Monitors and guides the selection and collection management work of a
network of subject specialists and disciplinary group coordinators.
Participates in collaborative initiatives within the library
and the university, and in broader professional and scholarly contexts.
Represents University Library in forums at the consortial, regional,
national, and international levelespecially those that focus on
initiatives, projects, policies, and standards related to collections,
collection support services, and archives.
Helps implement a new organizational structure that features
16 working groups organized into three service councils. The AULCS also
will be a key participant in a new senior management group the
planning council -- comprising one representative from each of the
service councils, the other AULs, the director of human resources and
organizational development, and the dean. As a member of the planning
council, the AULCS will actively participate in and lead a wide range of
planning and decision-making activities.
Assists the dean in managing and administering all aspects of
the librarys mission. Along with four other AULs, the AULCS will also
directly advise, support, and represent the dean and will carry out
specific administrative and management assignments as assigned or
necessary.
Qualifications
ALA accredited masters degree in library or information
science or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library
experience required. Additional advance degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience
leading operations or projects in an academic library or library
services organization; experience at an executive level helpful.
Knowledge and understanding of materials selection,
acquisition and licensing, processing, discovery, access, and automation
issues for general, special, distinctive, and archival collections.
Significant direct work and management experience in one or more of
these specializations desirable.
Demonstrated expertise in supervising, developing, and
coaching professional, paraprofessional, and technical staff.
Record of success creating and promoting a clear vision,
selling ideas, and following through on decisions in formal and informal
leadership situations.
Demonstrated ability to bring innovative and complex projects
to completion, especially for projects requiring collaboration across
library departments, and academic and administrative divisions across
the university.
Demonstrated success in donor relations, grant-writing and
administration, and other fund-raising and public relations activities.
