DESCRIPTION:
The Pratt Library is accepting applications for a Librarian Supervisor
I, Selection Unit Supervisor for the Collection Management Department.
The Collection Management Department is scheduled to move off-site early
2015 due to a renovation of the Central Library. The successful
candidate for this position will possess patience, vision, flexibility,
and a sense of humor to guide the Selection Unit through the renovation
process and beyond.
The Selection Unit Supervisor selects materials in all formats and age
groups, and coordinates the work of 5 librarians who choose resources
for the Central Library, 22 branch libraries, and 2 bookmobiles.
This position reports to the Manager of the Collection Management
Department, who oversees Selection, Acquisitions, Technical Services,
and Preservation.
The Central Library serves as the State Library Resource Center (SLRC),
as well as the downtown branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library system,
and the selection of resources reflects and supports the mission of both.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Anticipate the needs and interests of a diverse user population to
provide timely delivery of quality information resources to library
branches and departments.
Supervise professional and support staff in the day-to-day operations of
the Selection Unit, including training, mentoring, goal setting,
evaluation, and the maintenance of related personnel records.
Monitor the expenditure of a $3 million materials budget and recommend
allocation of funds in collaboration with CMD Manager.
Review and analyze Collection Assessment and Replacement Schedules to
address resource needs and respond to branch and department feedback.
Assist branch and department staff with selection, evaluation, weeding,
opening day collections, and other collection-related project work. Help
train library staff in collection development practices and processes.
Collaborate with selectors to identify and implement new models of
responsive and efficient collection development.
Conduct regular meetings of the Selection Unit, consulting with
department head to determine priorities and accomplish goals.
Work closely and effectively with other unit heads to ensure timely and
accurate purchasing, receipt, processing, and distribution of
materials. Mediate on behalf of the unit to assess and resolve
collection-related problems as needed.
Recommend strategies, policies, and procedures to improve collection
development, and facilitate collaboration between CMD and other library
departments.
Coordinate with Institutional Advancement staff to oversee the
responsible and timely expenditure and reporting of grants and gift funds.
Along with department head and/or selectors, meet with publisher and
vendor representatives to review, recommend, and evaluate library
products and services.
Participate in departmental planning and goal setting in support of the
librarys strategic plans. Serve on library committees and demonstrates
interest and engagement in library activities.
Track publishing trends and community interests, and seek out best
practices for building relevant library collections and facilitating
their use.
Maintain skills and knowledge through continuing education opportunities
and participation in local, regional, and/or national professional
activities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or
university. Five years of librarian experience. Three years of
supervisory experience. Familiar with MARC records and library
integrated systems.

*Familiar with SirsiDynix. Project management experience. Experience in
a public library and/or urban setting serving a diverse user population.
Experience with web-based bibliographic and acquisitions tools, such as
Baker & Taylors Title Source and Ingrams iPage. Genuine curiosity and
a commitment to lifelong learning, with a broad range of interests and
reading background

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities*
Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for existing & emerging
technologies. Familiarity with MARC records and integrated library
systems (SirsiDynix preferred). Knowledge of current trends in print,
non-print, and electronic resource publishing, access, and acquisition.
Understanding of the reading interests and demands of adults, young
adults, and children. Ability to communicate effectively and
respectfully, verbally and in writing, with customers and colleagues.
Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.

Must be eligible to for MD Librarian Certification within 90 days of hire.
