Access to Open Access resources
Hello,
Like many librarians, I've been trying to figure out how to facilitate our users
finding open access resources. We've added DOAJ to the link resolver, though not
every OA journal is in there. What's been bugging me lately is what to do about
the journals with author fees, where some articles are OA (if the author paid
the fee) and some are not.
I don't have any idea how many journals or articles this is, but what frustrates
me is that I can't figure out any way to connect our users to these articles. I
can't add the journals to the link resolver, because we don't have access to the
whole journal, just assorted articles. I thought maybe Google Scholar would
offer links (I've been directing students there increasingly because of its
availability to provide links to OA articles as well as library subscriptions),
but with the one article I tested out, Google Scholar did not seem to know it
was freely available. How would anyone who wanted the article ever figure out
that it was available, other than going to the journal's website?
Is this something anyone else has tried to figure out? It may just be a matter
of waiting for the landscape to evolve, but I'm curious if there's any solution
I haven't thought of.
Email me directly and I'll summarize for the list.
Thanks!
