Head, Humanities Section and Librarian for Literature & Theater Studies
The Head, Humanities Section provides leadership for the work of arts
and humanities subject liaisons and the development of library services
and resources for the arts and humanities disciplines, coordinating
engagement, instruction, collection development, and research services.
The Librarian for Literature & Theater Studies actively engages with
faculty, students, visiting scholars, and staff in the English
Department, Theater Studies Department, and the Literature Program.
She/he collaborates with colleagues to provide and promote library
resources and services that support these fields; manages the Libraries'
collections in these areas; and provides specialized research assistance
and instruction to library users.
*Responsibilities*
Section Head
·Provides leadership, training and supervision for subject librarians in
section, including goal setting and performance review
·Works with Head of Research and Instructional Services and other staff
to develop services and to support scholarly activities in the Duke
community
·Manages assigned general collections funds and oversees collections
funds held by members of the Humanities Section
·As a member of the Collections Coordinators Group, participates in
governance of Duke University Libraries' collections activities, funding
allocation and policy development across the disciplines.
·Convenes meetings of the Humanities Section on a regular basis and
communicates the group's activities·
Represents the Humanities Section on appropriate policy-setting committees
Engagement
·Serves as primary liaison to and actively develops professional
relationships with faculty, students and staff in assigned areas
·Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation for students,
faculty, and visiting scholars in assigned areas
·Teaches research tools and skills relevant to the discipline
·Contributes to university efforts to assess and promote institutional
scholarship (e.g. DukeSpace, Scholars_at_Duke, exhibits, events)
Collections
·Proactively and systematically develops and manages collections in
relevant formats and languages in assigned areas to support the research
and teaching needs of the Duke University community
·Promotes resources using current tools and technologies
·Collaborates with colleagues in related fields to acquire materials
Collective Responsibilities
·Participates in assignment to service desks, instant messaging and
first-year instruction.
·Contributes to the development of and access to library website,
research tools and other applications of technology
·Participates in or contributes to the ongoing evolution of the
Libraries' services
·Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and
takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should
be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge
and abilities, membership and participation in professional
organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a
professional capacity.
·Participates in development and fund raising efforts as appropriate
·Performs other tasks as designated by the department head or library
administration

·Supervises arts and humanities subject librarians
*Qualifications*
It is the expectation that all Duke University Libraries staff members

Education
·Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced
degree in a relevant subject area.
·Preferred: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program and an
advanced degree in a relevant subject field.
Experience
·Required: At least three years of experience as a subject librarian in
an academic library for a discipline in the humanities. Proficiency
with information resources in a variety of formats and subject areas;
teaching or library instruction experience. Must be flexible and a
self-starter; have the ability to work successfully in a highly
collaborative environment; possess excellent organizational,
interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills as well as a
strong commitment to public service; interest in and aptitude for
learning emerging technologies and web applications; commitment to
data-informed decision-making.
·Preferred: Supervisory and project management experience; relevant
professional experience and strong academic background in literature,
theater or other relevant field; experience providing research support,
preferably in an academic setting; experience collaborating on digital
scholarship projects; familiarity with web publishing technologies;
experience with user and/or usability study methodologies; experience
with assessment tools and methods; experience with data management and
knowledge of issues related to open access; experience managing library
collections budgets.
*Working Conditions*
·Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials
containing dust and mold is possible
·Occasional bending, crouching, stooping
·Normal office environment
·Occasional weekend and/or evening shifts required.

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience.
