CDL: Collection Evaluation Statistics?
From:
Joelle Hannert <jhannert_at_nmc.edu>

We collect the following statistics to help inform collection development:

  * New Title Circulation - percent of titles purchased in the last year
to have circulated at least once
  * Percent of Collection Circulated - percent of all titles within the
subject area to have circulated at least once in the past fiscal year
  * Circulation-Budget Comparison - a comparison of % of budget and % of
    circulation
  * *Print-eBook Comparison* - a comparison of print vs. eBook usage for
    each subject area

Below is a document explaining how we collect data on each of these
(originally created for an MLA Poster Session last year).

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Explanations of data collection

  Defining subject areas

An important aspect of our new collection-focused statistics is that
data are reported separately by subject area.We used LC call number
ranges to define these subject areas. This worked well for us because our
budget areas are set by LC call number range, and because the reporting
function in our ILS can easily limit data by call number.

  Print/eBook comparison

Figures for eBooks are taken from our largest subscription database,
ebrary.Use is counted if the title had 5 or more page views.Use of books
for this comparison counts the number of titles checked out.

  Percent of new title circulation

Two figures are collected to calculate this percentage; the number of
titles added to the collection in the previous year, starting in June,
and the number of those titles to have circulated in the previous year,
starting in July. The one-month gap in collecting data for titles added
and circulated gives new titles at least a month in the collection to
potentially circulate.Only data from our regular circulating collection
are used. The number of new titles to check out is then divided by the
number of new titles added to the collection to calculate the percentage.

  Percent of collection to circulate

Two figures are collected to calculate this percentage; the number of
titles in the collection, and the number of those titles to have
circulated in the previous year.Only data from our regular circulating
collection are used. The number of titles to check out is then divided by
the number of titles in the collection to calculate the percentage.

  Circulation/Budget comparison

Use is the sum of check-outs and renewals for books in the regular
circulating collections, plus in-house uses of reference books. This
number is reported for each subject area as a percentage of the use in
all areas. The total spending for each subject area is also reported as a
percentage of spending in all areas.

Hi Elizabeth,

I would be interested in more information on the library portion of the
program reviews. Did the library or another part of the college
initiate this? What do you usually discuss, and how often does this
meeting happen?

Right now our library is responsible for reaching out & creating those
networks, but I like the idea of a standing meeting.

Thanks!
