//CDL: Problems disposing of withdrawn books. //
//
//Hi All,//
//
//At the Western Kentucky University Libraries, we are having quite a
problem disposing of our withdrawn books. Local recycling does not want
them and neither does our institutional surplus. We sell a lot at the
annual library sale and we send some of our unwanted gifts to
BetterWorld Books, but does anyone have any other creative ideas? //

Try contacting your local Goodwill or Salvation Army? Our local store
took issue in the past when books were just dropped off in their
thousands, but when we have leftovers from a book sale we ring them up.
They send a truck and a couple of workers and collect it all. Of
course, what we mostly send is popular fiction and general-audience
nonfiction, not academic works, but it's worth a shot!

I am not sure this is a particularly creative idea but we recycle our
books through our recycling service on campus. Our student workers cut
the pages out of the books (as I think the glue in books prevents
effective recycling) and we toss the covers and recycle the paper. This
process is time consuming but a good job for student workers when they
have down time.

The word "creative" is the key. There are a lot of artists who use
books in their works. Is there a local artist group/art school/WKU art
dept. that might want these for projects? _________

Can you send more to Better World Books? They take a lot and only have
minimal list of items they will not take.

Hi Jack,

What we can or cannot do with withdrawn books is governed by State of NC
regulations. Since WKU is a state-supported school, I suggest you check
KY law before going much further! Good luck!

Hi, Jack. I deal with serials here at Pittsburg State University. When
I discard serials, I evaluate the item's condition and potential
usefulness to other libraries. I list the ones in good condition on the
listservs listed below. For items of local/state interest, I have been
known to contact other libraries my state and offer them the volumes to
fill in holes in their collections. It helps other libraries and
creates good will.

Hi Jack,

Perhaps consider partnering with your art department to host a contest
for book art? See
http://www.inspirationgreen.com/art-from-old-books.html for some fun
examples of what might emerge.
