ALCTS webinar: Libraries and MOOCs: Providing Solutions for Alt-Higher Ed

Date: October 9, 2013

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

Description: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are sweeping the
country and libraries and librarians are watching this development
carefully. This series of four webinars will help librarians gain an
understanding of the complexity of the MOOC "movement," learn how to
support students and faculty engaged with MOOCs, become familiar with
the copyright and intellectual property requirements in relation to
MOOCs, and hear what the future may hold for MOOCs.

On October 9, 2013, Steven Bell, Associate University Librarian for
Research & Instructional Services at Temple University, will offer
"Libraries and MOOCs: Providing Solutions for Alt-Higher Ed." With
higher education in a transformative period, librarians are reviewing
trends and thinking about how they will fit into this new landscape
which might be called "alt-higher ed." Whether a traditional online
course, or a MOOC, librarians should be recognized as full partners in
curricular development and student support. Steven will discuss how
librarians can insert themselves effectively into the conversation and
as 'solutions- providers,' not solely 'ingredients-suppliers,'
librarians are true gate-openers in the world of alternative higher
education.

Who should attend? Librarians, library administrators, and library
educators interested in supporting and enhancing libraries' preparation
of and participation in MOOCs.

Presenter: Steven J. Bell is the Associate University Librarian for
Research and Instructional Services at Temple University and served as
the president of ACRL for 2012-13. Steven writes and speaks about
academic librarianship, learning technologies, library management,
higher education, design thinking and user experience. He is a
co-founder of the Blended Librarian's Online Learning Community on the
Learning Times Network and enjoys delivering virtual presentations.
