RE: Allocation Expenditures for Artwork?

Hi Rusty,

Well, because the art dept. offers a course in the “art of the book,” (book as
art) we do purchase some original art. It is not single work framed art (like a
single photograph, sculpture or a painting), but we do purchase limited
editions, sometimes with loose plates (single or multiple), or objects, even
with original works, drawings or prints, as long as it is in a book or book-like
format. Actually our English dept. also teaches that course on occasion, and
they have used their library allocation for such material. How we handle is
procedural, and we do not include or exclude in our CD policy.

We generally house in our special collections area (closed stacks, no check out,
only reading room access) or closed reserves, and only allow the faculty who
requested or are teaching the course to check out. And in some cases, because
of the class, we do have a 2 hr. in-house closed reserves check out for students
to examine the works. The bib record indicates what “pieces” are included in
the work, and the staff is instructed to check for them when the item is
returned. I have also used them for displays in our exhibit cases. This allows
other students who would not necessarily see them, to view these wonderful and
unique works.

Here is an article published in the ARLIS/TxMx chapter newsletter about the
exhibit. http://www.arlis-txmx.org/node/462
