We have been systematically replacing VHS starting last year.

First, we replaced anything that had been on reserve in the last 2 years.

Next, we replaced the highest use VHS first until we used up the money set aside
for this project. We will do this each year with some pot of money.

We bought a lot of movies from a movie store going out a business over a dozen
years ago. Any of those movies not used were discarded.

Subject RE: Phasing out our video collection

Hi Karen,

We just went through this last Fall - IT updated all the classroom computers and
removed the VHS players.

We had been working in the last few years on updating the library's VHS
collection based on circulation statistics so we thought we'd be well prepared.
We were surprised however at finding is how many faculty used personal VHS
copies for their classrooms. So we've been working very closely with faculty to
either get the DVD or find acceptable alternatives.

My suggestion is to alert the faculty many times that this is coming (and expect
unhappiness with that) but also to be prepared to learn that there are many
video materials being used that the library knows nothing about. We were able to
get some money to help us cover the cost of these unexpected purchases which was
really helpful as well because this material directly impacted teaching activities.

Let me know if you want to know more.

Mike
