POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  ASSOCIATE DEAN OF LIBRARIES


Central Michigan University seeks an Associate Dean of Libraries to join the leadership team of an outstanding academic library. Serving over 27,000 students, CMU is a doctoral research institution recognized for strong undergraduate education and a range of focused graduate programs and research, including a new College of Medicine with its first student class entering this summer.  The CMU Libraries offer over 1.3 million cataloged items and an increasing array of technology-supported services for convenient access to a wealth of online and on-site academic information resources. The staff is comprised of 70 regular staff, including 27 professional librarians.  In 2012 the University celebrated the 10th anniversary of the beautiful Park Library.  The CMU Libraries also are a recognized leader in services for students and faculty of online and off-campus academic programs.

Position Description:
This position provides leadership support for the Dean of Libraries in planning, budgeting, program development, marketing, personnel evaluation, and goal implementation for the Libraries; oversees all University Library service operations; works with the Dean and senior academic/university personnel, as required, in the coordination and alignment of the University Libraries' services and programs with the University's goals and priorities; represents the Libraries and the Dean in contacts with library constituencies and at professional meetings and events both on- and off-campus; serves as the CMU Libraries' chief administrative officer in the absence of the Dean.  This is a senior officer position in the University and, as such, the Associate Dean serves at the will of the President.

Required Qualifications:
MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA- accredited program.  Six years of professional academic library experience.  Four years of successful leadership and supervisory experience in an academic library at the department-head level or higher.  Excellent understanding of academic library trends and challenges in an environment of rapid change in technologies as well as in instructional and scholarly communication practices.  Significant experience in academic library program planning and implementation.  Experience managing budgets.  A record of programmatic initiatives and accomplishments indicating commitment to library service excellence.  Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications:
Evidence of successful contribution to innovation in library services; additional advanced degree; significant record of professional publications and/or evidence of professional activity/accomplishments.
