Dear Colleagues,
The University of Minnesota Libraries has been identified in the
University's 6 year capital plan and is conducting an environmental scan as
part of its analysis of options for addressing physical space needs for the
general and special collections for the next 25-30 years. These options
will be conditioned by trends in digital storage and content delivery,
shared print archiving programs, and scholarly communication, by local
factors, and by what we learn about the state of the art in space planning
for research collections.
As facilitator of the process of writing a Capital Planning Program
Statement, I am writing on behalf of a team of UMN colleagues to request
contributions to our scan of relevant trends, projects and ideas.
*We are interested in publications, planning documents, ideas and
perspectives, nationally and internationally, that might inform our work
locally, on topics including: *
1. Recent research, trends and projects in planning and design of high
density storage facilities.
2. Models for and factors in projecting collection size (footprint) in
both general and special collections.
3. Compelling approaches to space planning and design, e.g. specific
buildings or space configurations.
4. Holistic collection management plans, and innovative approaches to
collection management.
5. Long range preservation and conservation planning.
6. Shared space partnerships with non-library cultural heritage
organizations, e.g. with campus and regional museums, state archives and
historical societies, etc. We are in tune with the emerging library shared
collections programs, but wish to extend our thinking beyond these.
7. Operational and service considerations in long range collection space
planning.
8. Outside the box approaches and ideas.
9. Lessons learned from those who have recently completed planning and/or
design or construction of space for collections.
*Relevant links, citations, documents, ideas or perspectives are most
welcome. * Please reply to me off list.
A number of us will be at ALA Midwinter and would be glad to meet with
people who wish to share their experiences and ideas on these matters.
With appreciation,
Sam Demas *for the UMN Libraries Capital Program Statement Group:*
