The Collection and Resource Services Department in the Zach S.
Henderson Library invites nominations and applications for the
position of Coordinator of Collection Development. Georgia Southern
University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the
University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research
University, is one of Georgia's premier universities. A residential
university serving more than 20,000 students, Georgia Southern is
recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university
with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the
University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree
programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through
eight colleges. In 2012, Georgia Southern was named one of the top 10
most popular universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
The more than 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a
classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head
Island.
Within this setting, the Zach S. Henderson Library's mission is to
support the University by providing access to information,
collections, and services designed to meet the scholarly needs of the
University. In addition, the Library promotes independent lifelong
learning, employs a learner-centered service ethic, and ensures a
comfortable and secure study environment. The Coordinator of
Collection Development plays a pivotal role in the library's mission,
working in a collaborative team environment to facilitate discovery
and access to library collections, information, and knowledge for the
student, researcher and scholar alike.
Position Description: Reporting to the Head of Collection and Resource
Services, the Coordinator of Collection Development provides
leadership for the development of general library collections, works
closely with library and campus faculty in collection analysis and
evaluation; oversees a liaison program to determine collection needs
of faculty and students; evaluates electronic and consortia purchases;
works collaboratively on resource sharing and consortia opportunities;
assists with initial product license negotiations; contributes to
library budgeting, planning, and decision making; and provides
reference assistance on a rotation basis. The Coordinator of
Collection Development supervises two staff members and possibly
student assistants.
The position requires meeting performance requirements in library
duties, research, and service, along with a master's degree in Library
Science. This position is a 12-month tenure track appointment at the
level of assistant professor. Entry level salary is $42,000 and is
negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience. In accordance
with University System of Georgia requirements for promotion and
tenure, all library faculty must achieve the following: superior
professional performance, demonstrating excellence in librarianship;
outstanding service to the institution, profession, and/or the
community; outstanding research, scholarship, creative activity or
academic achievement; professional growth and development.
Required Qualifications:
ALA-accredited master's degree in Library Science by January 1, 2013
One year of full-time experience in budgeting, collection
development, and/or acquisitions in an academic or public library
Demonstrated knowledge of major trends in scholarly communication
Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues
Interest in and potential for meeting established promotion and tenure criteria
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with electronic products and licenses
Experience full or part-time providing effective reference assistance
in an academic library
Experience full or part-time working with a diverse student body
Supervisory experience
Knowledge of special collections
Screening of applications begins October 21, 2012, and continues until
the position is filled. The preferred position starting date is
January 7, 2013, but is flexible. A complete application consists of a
