Sorry to be so incredibly slow, but here is a summary of the responses I
received in August 2010 to my short survey concerning the organization and
evaluation of collection development librarians. Thirty-eight academic
libraries of various sizes responded. My original message follows:
----------
"Our library is considering new ways of organizing collection development
and public services. We are a medium-sized academic library. We currently
have subject librarians with reference, instruction, and collection
development included in their duties. Could you please answer the following
questions about how things are organized at your library? We would really
appreciate any feedback we can get.

1. Is collection development considered part of public or technical
services?
2. Do you have dedicated bibliographers who only do collection development?
3. Do you have subject liaison librarians who have multiple
responsibilities in reference, instruction, and collection development?
4. If so, to whom do these liaisons report?
5. Who evaluates the performance of the liaisons in each area of
responsibility?

Please reply directly to me and I'll summarize the responses for the list."
-----------

We at Illinois State University's Milner Library did decide after this
survey to retain our existing structure with subject librarians handling
multiple responsibilities (including collection development) rather than
move to a dedicated bibliographer model. Collection Development remained in
Public Services and most subject librarians now report to a Head of
Reference& Liaison Services.
