*ALCTS webinar: 2CUL: Cornell and Columbia Collaborate--Aspirations for
Next Gen Tech Services*

*Date: December 14, 2011*
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

*Description*: In 2009, the libraries of Columbia University and Cornell
University initiated a collaboration designed to integrate, at a deep
level, many of the core functions libraries perform.

For the past two years, we have been working to build collaborative
relationships in the broad area of technical services. Our experience to
date has taught us a good deal about the nature of collaboration. Some
of our findings are hardly surprising or unique, and mirror the
experiences of similar ventures such as the University of California's
Next Generation Technical Services initiative. However, the broad scope
of 2CUL and its intense focus on just two library systems gives this
venture challenges, and opportunities, that are unique.

*Learning Outcomes*: Explore possibilities for collaboration of tech
services units at different institutions

*Audience*: Anyone with an interest in collaboration that anticipates
the challenges of physical and philosophical distances

*Presenters*: *Scott Wicks *has a long history of working
collaboratively to develop products and workflows that optimize staff
resources. His 23-year tenure at Cornell University has afforded him
many opportunities to work across functional areas within the
institution, but also to consider 'radical collaboration' across
institutions through the Mellon-funded 2CUL initiative with Columbia
University. He holds an MLS from the University of Buffalo and an MBA
from Cornell University and Queens University.

*Bob Wolven *has worked at Columbia University since 1972 in capacities
ranging from Chemistry Librarian, to Serials Cataloger to Director of
Systems to his current position as AUL. He is a frequent speaker and
writer on issues related to cataloging policy, metadata, and technical
services in libraries, and has served on planning and advisory groups
for the Library of Congress, Digital Library Federation, the HathiTrust
and the RLG Partnership among others.
