UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LIBRARY
Associate University Librarian for Research
The University of Michigan Library seeks an entrepreneurial,
collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented leader for the new
position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research.
Reporting to the University Librarian, and collaborating with the other
members of MLibrary's leadership, the AUL for Research will embody the
library's mission to engage in all facets of the scholarly process, from
beginning to end. By embracing the transformative role of information
technology, the AUL for Research will forge exciting directions in a
world where new and emerging epistemologies challenge us to exploit the
interplay of learning, knowing, creating, and sharing.
At MLibrary, we recognize that the creation of services to enable the
use and reuse of data is becoming increasingly essential to research; we
are seeking a leader with the conceptual and technical knowledge to
advance this development. The new AUL for Research has an unprecedented
opportunity to promote the design and implementation of campus-wide
services that will facilitate the collection, curation, management, and
preservation of data in support of qualitative and quantitative research
methods in the humanities and the arts, as well as engineering,
sciences, and social sciences.
The Research area includes over 70 talented staff, most of them subject
specialists who cover a vast range of disciplines, scholarly activities,
and research formats. The AUL for Research must build partnerships with
academic departments and programs to address the entire range of
research needs of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff;
improve the climate for scholarly communication; effectively use
instructional technologies; embrace new research resources while
supporting traditional research methods; and encourage interdisciplinary
research and collaboration across campus and beyond. The AUL for
Research must be fully dedicated to public service, and to supporting
the activities of our subject specialists and department liaisons.
We are looking for an academic leader who views the library as we do: as
an integral part of a world-class research university.
