*Expanding and Understanding Access Options: From Open Access to Patron
Driven to Article Rental*
Sunday, January 9, 2011, 4:00-5:30 pm
San Diego Convention Center, Room 02
When every library budget dollar must count, one access option
definitely does not fit all. Librarians and publishers must consider new
methods to get researchers the content they need. Join us to learn about
some newer access options that might better fit your library needs. Some
universities now require faculty to publish in Open Access journals, but
how does this shift affect their libraries? Bob Schatz (BioMed Central,
Springer) will explain how your library can play its part and how the
new SpringerOpen journals expand publication options to researchers
across more fields than ever before. Patron-driven purchasing is another
access option that promises to match eBook purchases with precise
researcher/student needs and to ensure that library purchases will not
sit unused on the virtual shelf. What are the pros and cons of such an
agreement? Kari Paulson (EBL) will detail this new "on-demand"
acquisition option. Finally, article rental offers varying access
options that tailor-fit content acquisition to researcher needs. How
might unaffiliated researchers secure access to individual articles?
Where might temporary access to content be procured? Bill Park
(DeepDyve) will reveal how individuals and libraries can access valuable
content through this new model and what advanced search options are
possible though growing publisher collaborations.
