Responsible for serving as a subject specialist in the social sciences; for recommending 
materials for selection; acting as a liaison with faculty; for coordinating subject-based 
teams. Participate in collection development formulation and implementation working with 
the Director of Collection Development. Also responsible for providing professional 
general and subject specific reference service to all NSU affiliated users, both local and 
distance, and Broward County public users; for providing assistance and library 
instruction to the university community and Broward County users; for providing 
documentation to assist in teaching. Some travel to sites for teaching library resources 
as needed. Weekend and evening hours are required.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Provide professional reference service to all NSU affiliated users, both local and 
distance, and Broward County public users in person, by phone, and via computer.
2. Participate in the subject bibliographers' collection development committee, which 
assists the Director of Collection Development in collection development formulation and 
implementation. Work closely with Acquisition Department staff.
3. Recommend suitable materials in all formats for the Alvin Sherman Library collections 
for assigned subject area.
4. Participate in weeding projects as needed.
5. Maintain a working relationship with faculty in assigned subject area and keep them 
informed about current library issues.
6. Review course offerings and syllabi in subject area and make recommendations for 
purchase to ensure that the Alvin Sherman Library's collections support curriculum and 
research needs.
7. Coordinate subject-based and special project teams and act as a liaison to the Director 
of Collection Development.
8. Review approval plans, faculty requests, book reviews, trade and national 
bibliographies, advertisements, dealer catalogs, etc., to place orders in assigned subject 
area.
9. Maintain approval plan profiles, making changes and updating as needed in assigned 
subject area.
10. Assess quality and physical condition of library materials and make recommendations on 
retention, transfer, or preservation of items.
11. Participate in the Special Collections Collection Development Committee to assess 
databases and other electronic resources and make recommendations.
12. Provide individualized and group instruction on the use of library resources including 
the use of specialized databases, and produce documentation to assist in training and 
teaching.
13. Assist in the creation and maintenance of web pages.
Other Job Functions:
1. Attend professional library meetings away from the campus, representing the library to 
the larger community. Participate in SEFLIN committees/events as needed.
2. Act as liaison and promote library services to NSU students, faculty, and staff, and 
Broward County users.
3. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required degree: Library Science from an ALA-accredited school.
  Required Experience:
1. Professional library experience.
2. Current computer skills, including online searching and MS office productivity software.
3. Experience recommending the selection of library materials.
4. Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience:
1. Two years of professional library experience.
2. Demonstrated experience in developing collection development plans.
3. Demonstrated experience in coordinating the selection and acquisition of library materials.
4. Experience working with faculty.
5. Graduate work in the social sciences.
6. Experience working with budgets.
