ALCTS MidWinter Symposium

Friday, January 7, 2011 in San Diego, CA, just prior to ALA Midwinter
Beams & Bytes: Constructing the Future Library -- Architectural and Digital Considerations

Changing user expectations and the relentless shift to the digital medium are rapidly
influencing library structures and services. No longer just a reference and circulation
desk or a static repository for books and journals, the 21st Century library is evolving
to accommodate new services, collecting patterns, and user demands. Both presentations
and participative activities will focus on the physical and digital infrastructure of
libraries, conceiving and creating services to meet user needs and expectations,
transforming collections and access, and how all of this will affect the people who work
in libraries.

Speakers are:

John Blyberg, Assistant Director for Innovation and User Services, Darien Public Library,
Darien, CT

Michael Giarlo, Digital Library Architect, Penn State University, University Park, PA

Jeffrey M. Hoover, Architect, Tappe Associates, Inc., Boston, MA

Patricia Hswe, Digital Collections Curator, Penn State University Libraries, University
Park, PA

Luis Obispo, CA
