HEAD of the PHYSICS LIBRARY
The University of Arkansas Libraries seek applications from dynamic, innovative,
technologically-savvy, service-oriented candidates for the position of Head of
the Physics Library. The head will provide services for physics programs and
interdisciplinary programs dependent upon physics (nanoscience, space and
planetary sciences, microelectronics-photonics, and other related science
disciplines). Reference and research services, instruction on resources,
liaison and outreach activities, and collaborative collection development are
the core responsibilities. Others include oversight of daily operations,
supervision of 3.5 FTE employees, and contributing to the goals of the
University Libraries. Reports to the Director for Public Services. The
appointee will be expected to meet criteria for promotion and tenure,
demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, and participate in campus-wide
activities to enhance library services.
Qualifications. Required: American Library Association (ALA) accredited
master’s degree (or equivalent) and a bachelor’s degree in physics, biophysics,
astronomy, space and planetary science, or a related science discipline;
experience in an academic or research library; and demonstrated knowledge of
emerging technologies used in the delivery of information services. Preferred:
Supervisory experience; a graduate degree in physics or related science discipline.
Salary and Benefits. Entry level, tenure-track, twelve-month appointment at the
rank of Assistant Librarian. Minimum salary $44,000. Benefits include
TIAA/CREF and/or Fidelity, 22 days of annual leave, tuition reduction, and
health coverage.
Background. The University Libraries system is comprised of David W. Mullins
(main) Library, the Physics Library, the Chemistry and Biochemistry Library, the
Fine Arts Library, and the Robert A. and Vivian Young Law Library. Combined
holdings number over 1.8 million volumes. The libraries participate in the
Greater Western Library Alliance, the Center for Research Libraries, and other
state and national consortia. Library personnel (FTE) include 57 faculty and
professional staff, 79 support staff, and 21 student assistants.
The Physics Library, http://libinfo.uark.edu/physics/default.asp, supports the
Department of Physics, http://www.uark.edu/depts/physics/, a part of the
Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Research Centers associated with the
Physics Department include the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences
and Center for Semiconductor Physics in Nanostructure, an interdisciplinary
collaboration between the University of Arkansas and the University of Oklahoma.
An under-construction $28M Nanoscience building will position Arkansas as a
leader in nanotechnology through the regional interdisciplinary Institute for
Nanoscale Material Science and Engineering. The departmental areas of research
are biophysics, computational/theoretical physics, nano-physics/condensed
matter, quantum and non-linear optics, astronomy, physics education research,
and laser and optical physics. The University of Arkansas campus
