[Original post, then the response. JA]

Hello all,
I recently told our faculty senate that we are interested in developing a program of
faculty liaisons to the library, primarily to assist with CD. A faculty member
asked me
about the expected time commitment that such an appointment involved, and I did
not have
an answer for him. Has anyone on the list ever provided faculty with a formal
or informal
estimate of the workload involved in serving as a liaison to the library? Are
there any
institutions that provide release time for their library liaisons? If you have
such a
program at your institution, I would also be interested in hearing about how it is
determined who becomes a liaison (e.g. appointed by dept. chair, elected by
dept., asked
by library to serve). Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject RE: Workload of faculty liaisons to the library?
Darren,
We have a very informal liaison program here and I have never done an
estimate on the faculty time involved. In the past the person in my position
sent out an email to all faculty asking for title requests to spend their
department's allotment of the library book budget. A few would respond, but not
many. This past fall I emailed all the department chairs and asked to meet with
them regarding their allotments. Over half responded and met with me. When I
met with them I explained the formula we use to determine their allotment, I
shared publisher catalogs with them that were relevant to their department and
answered any questions they had (or found an answer later and got back with
them). I also gave them a deadline for when I needed their title requests.
Most of the ones I met with sent me their requests and those who did not have
time to investigate specific titles at least gave me particular topics that they
would like to see built up in the library collection.
