Reference Librarian (Science Emphasis)

Reference Librarian: Known for its leadership in distance learning and its mission to
serve, Joyner Library, East Carolina University (ECU) seeks an enthusiastic, flexible,
energetic, service-oriented, and innovative individual for the position of Reference
Librarian with emphasis on the sciences. The librarian provides face-to-face and online
general reference, science reference, and instructional services for students and faculty;
serves as liaison to one or more science departments and works closely with faculty within
these departments to develop and assess the library's collections and services and to
integrate library resources into teaching and learning; develops library-related
instructional materials that support the curriculum; participates in scholarly
communications initiatives. The librarian is a member of the Academic Library Services
(ALS) Reference Department, and reports to the Head of Reference. Scheduled hours at the
reference desk, including some evening and weekend work, are required. Position is
available beginning July 1, 2010.
Finalists will be asked to make a presentation during the on-campus interview.
Required Qualifications:
· ALA-accredited master's degree or international equivalent in library or information
science
· Strong commitment to public service in the academic library
· Experience with science reference materials
· Strong interest in collection development in the sciences
· Demonstrated interest in scholarly communication initiatives
· Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
· Ability to work effectively with staff and users
· Ability to achieve tenure through effective job performance, service and research
Preferred Qualifications:
· Degree or concentration in a science discipline including: life, earth, health or
physical sciences
· Instructional experience
· Experience in library collection development tools, trends and practices
· Demonstrated knowledge of web and personal computer based software applications
· Familiarity with government documents

Rank, Salary and Benefits: This is a twelve-month tenure track faculty position with a
comprehensive fringe benefits package. Professional achievement, service, and
research/creative activity are required for tenure and promotion. Rank and salary will be
commensurate with candidate’s experience and professional achievement (minimum salary of
$45,000).
