RE: HighWire seeks librarians' input in ebook development.
Gentlepeople,
Just so you know: I saw my first e-book on a friend's Kindle a few days ago.
Just realized that it would be an easy way to carry a big book around for
reading on my commute. Cannot begin to answer the survey. Sorry. I sure I'm not
the only one out here who has been a librarian for more than 30 years, works in
a special library, wrote an entire PhD dissertation on a manual typewriter, and
has only a faint idea how e-books work. How does a library have a collection of
e-books? And why would there be any other way to "keep" them except by buying
them? If they are "lent by download", when they are overdue, can one just zap
them off the person's "device"? I don't see us having the technology to do any
of this any time soon. And what happens when computers go down?
