Dear Collection Development leaders,

I am attempting to determine how much space we could save in our remote shelving facility
if we decided to rely on other trusted repositories and not transfer all of our journal
backfiles to the annex --- when we have online versions available. We will not consider
aggregators trusted repositories at this time.

Has anyone sent their paper copies of major journals with backfiles (e.g. Elsevier,
Springer, JSTOR, ACS, APS) or other materials (e.g. PubMed) away and in the process
developed accurate numbers for space considerations?

Your data would be greatly appreciated as we perform a cost/benefit analysis of this
important collaborative vs local policy decision. As with many others, we are running out
of room in our facilities and need to reconsider what we choose to shelve. (Our next
review will be of older books that we imagine will not see much local use and are held in
a number of other annex collections.)

     David
