Responsibilities:
Coordinate collection development for all Social Science
disciplines, by working with and advising other selectors for
social science disciplines and by working with the Associate
University Librarian for Collections and Services, and by working
with relevant staff in Technical Services departments.
Serve as subject specialist for one or more disciplines in the
social sciences, with specific responsibilities for the
assessment, development, selection and management of research
collections and information resources in all formats in support
of the research and teaching needs of the relevant academic
departments and programs. Disciplines covered by the SSRG are:
anthropology, communication, economics, political science,
psychology, and sociology.
Supervise the work of designated SSRG support staff responsible
for bibliographic assistance and operational activities.
Coordinate social science public services activities, including
planning and organizing Library public events related to the
social sciences.
Identify, assess, and select, in coordination with Social
Science Data & Software, numeric datasets relevant to the
research and teaching needs of the disciplines assigned.
Identify relevant resources for digitization projects, and work
in collaboration with relevant units (e.g., Digital Library
Systems and Services) to manage implementation and completion.
In conjunction with the procedures of the Department of Special
Collections, identify, assess and acquire archival and manuscript
materials relevant to the research and instructional needs of
assigned departments and programs.
Evaluate existing collections for appropriate storage,
preservation, and conservation treatment.
Collaborate with other subject specialists to provide coverage
of interdisciplinary areas outside of conventional subject
boundaries.
Participate, as appropriate, in development activities in
support of the Libraries, including fundraising, grant writing,
and donor relations.
Provide advanced reference, research assistance, outreach
services, and instruction for undergraduates, graduates, and
faculty in the disciplines assigned.
Serve as primary liaison between SULAIR and the academic
departments for the disciplines assigned.
Prepare interpretive materials to enhance access to the
collections, including Web pages for the SULAIR Web site and the
use of innovative methods and technologies.
Serve as collection development liaison to one or more
interdisciplinary programs in the Stanford Jackson Library of the
Graduate School of Business, the Crown Law Library of the School
of Law, the Lane Library of the School of Medicine and the Hoover
Library and Archives of the Hoover Institution.
Qualifications:
Required:
Substantial knowledge of or experience in research libraries,
including substantial collection development work in the social
sciences.
MLS degree (ALA accredited), or the equivalent in training and
experience.
M.A. degree in a subject area of the social sciences.
Substantial knowledge of numeric data resources and how such
resources are used by faculty and students.
Experience with current technologies and information systems,
and their application to the delivery of library services to
students and faculty.
Demonstrated skills in effective written and oral communication.
Demonstrated skills to work independently as well as in a team
environment.
Preferred:
Ph.D. degree in a subject area of the social sciences.
Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods and analysis
in social science research and instructions.
Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
Successful experience in providing public services.
Demonstrated supervisory and team-leadership skills.
Experience providing academic library instruction.
