Collection Development in Academic Libraries Interest Group ALA
Meeting - July 11
From: "Julia M. Gelfand" <jgelfand_at_uci.edu>
Please join the CMDS Collection Development in Academic Libraries
Interest Group at ALA:
Saturday, July 11 from 1:30-3:00pm
Palmer House, Adams Ballroom
Discussion Topic is: "Patron Initiated Collection Development in
Academic Libraries: Sharing Local Experiences & Implications for
Change"
The format will be a bit different for logistical reasons, but
will strongly encourage and promote discussion. Three librarians
from different kinds of institutions have been invited to share
their institution's planning and experiences with the topic and
an open discussion will follow with opportunities for questions
and exchange. Notes will be captured and distributed
post-meeting. Vendors, publishers, providers and all others are
invited to attend. Please come learn and share information.
This is a hot topic this year and even though there has been much
about it in the professional literature and on
current blogs and at other meetings, there still appears to be a
lot to learn. Likely topics to be covered include: budgetary
concerns & fiscal planning; role of usage statistics in
determining provision of content; ownership or subscription
models; rolling patron plans; what happens as collection ages;
patron initiated vs traditional collection development: what is
the mix of subject breadth; impact on approval plans or is this a
new version of approval plan?; the collection/acquisitions
playground; articulating to vendors new practices & institutional
needs; applications across formats; any other related topics &
issues.
Speakers/Facilitators/Commentators:
Jonathan Nabe, Collection Development Librarian for Science and
Technology, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
Jim Dooley, Head of Collection Services, University of
California, Merced
Mary Woodley, Collection Development Coordinator, California
State University, Northridge
There will also be a very brief "business meeting" to elect a
convener or Chair for this group for 2010-11; please consider
nominating yourself or a colleague or sending nominations to me
in order that we can have their willingness to serve if they can
not be in attendance. The ALA 2011 MW meeting will be in San
Diego and the 2011 Annual meeting will be in New Orleans. I am
really encouraging a smooth transition to happen without much
stress and fanfare - it is not a lot of work and I have prepared
a cheat-sheet to follow and keep revised about procedural side.
It will allow you to test your creative side, too!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Chicago!
