Disposing of print vols. of serials that are also found in JSTOR,
POA, etc. From: "Linwood DeLong" <linwood.delong_at_uwinnipeg.ca>
Dear Colleagues,
I have been asked to find out how other libraries dispose of
print volumes of journals, should they decide that the print
vols. are superfluous, because these titles are also available
full-text in JSTOR, Periodicals Archive Online, and other similar
sources.
Do you undertake any form of recycling, do you send them to
landfill, send them to a Developing Country, or .....
I welcome your responses.
Thanks,
Linwood DeLong

One concern that I did not mention in my comments earlier is that
with some disciplines, such as art, keeping the print may be more
appropriate to make sure that you have the illustrations and that
they are clearly readable.

We have so far not withdrawn the last local copy of print
holdings found in JSTOR. When we wish to dispose of bound
serials, we may offer them first to other libraries -- esp. ones
in the state of Michigan or in the CIC consortium, but also NLM
or others depending on the nature of the material. We also send
some serials to Better World Books, but more often recycle as
described by others. While we have general procedures we follow,
we do make some case-by-case determinations as needed to save
staff time, or to complete a project on a particular schedule.
