Disposing of print vols. of serials that are also found in JSTOR,
POA, etc.
From: "Linwood DeLong" <linwood.delong_at_uwinnipeg.ca>
Dear Colleagues,
I have been asked to find out how other libraries dispose of
print volumes of journals, should they decide that the print
vols. are superfluous, because these titles are also available
full-text in JSTOR, Periodicals Archive Online, and other similar
sources.
Do you undertake any form of recycling, do you send them to
landfill, send them to a Developing Country,
or .....
I welcome your responses.
Thanks,

Hello, Linwood.
There has been a lot of discussion about this issue on SERIALST
listserv
in the past few years. The fact is that most libraries just
don't have
the room to continually store bound volumes like this when they are
available in an ownership model database like JSTOR. You should
check the
SERIALST archives, but I do know that some libraries on the list are
discarding JSTOR bound volumes and giving them away to other
libraries
through listservs like BACKSERV, BACKMED (if they are medical
journals),
and ALCTSDEU. As far as giving them away to other countries, I don't
know. My library does subscribe to 3 JSTOR packages, but are
currently
maintaining our print holdings. We have discussed discarded
them, and
possibly will in the future. Generally, when we discard print
volumes, we
recycle them, but I can't say for sure what we would do with them.
Sincerely,

At Cornell we store one copy of the print in the annex.

We actually did this a few years ago; due to space constraints,
we pulled many of our bound journals that were available in JSTOR.
Here is our process: we remove the paper "innards" from the hard
binding with a box cutter, and put them in recycling bins. We
simply throw the back and front away. The trash bags get heavy
quickly, so we fill them halfway, label them as trash, and out
they go.

Greetings,
We recycle, and have pulled and recycled our JSTOR titles.
We have found a way to recycle everything but microfiche/film, if
anyone knows of a way to recycle those, please let me know..
