Hi folks:
When students request/suggest books for your library’s collection, do
you accept such requests directly from students or are they received
through faculty and advisers?
Please feel free to reply off-list at tjosey_at_norwich.edu

We have an online suggestion form that can be used by anyone. It has occasionally been used by students who in some cases made good suggestions for purchase. Faculty often just send me an email or phone me with their specific requests. Unfortunately we also have students who occasionally use the form to request textbooks for class. The site is not used heavily and I would have to say that it seems that most of the requests that come through are from authors and publishers who are pushing sales of their books. We receive very few requests. Most of the time students will tell the
folks at the Circulation desk and this is passed to me. Joan Perlman

Students are welcome to fill out our online purchase request form, and
"Student" is one of the options available on our form for the status of
the requestor. I do check the status of all online purchase requestors.
Although folks worry that they will be inundated with online requests
from students, in truth the total number of legitimate online purchase
requests from faculty and students is minimal. I receive a greater
number of requests through the reference desk and reference librarians--
I have a very open-ended form that is kept at the reference desk to
record areas of unmet need-- i.e. when someone comes to the desk and
asks for material on specific topics, or for specific authors or titles,
and we don't have what they need, I like to know. The form just records
the topic or title/author on a "list" and when the list is filled, I get
the form and they start a new list. We do not record the name of the
student making these in-person requests, so there is no need for me to
follow up. I do get occasional requests from graduate students with a
list of resources that they need, and they very often relay these
requests through faculty, esp. if they are working on a thesis.
