RE: Compact shelving
All of the circulating collection at the Alvin Sherman Library has been on
compact shelving since the building opened in December 2001. I've never
heard that we've had any major problems with it (beyond patrons not making
the correct "jump" across aisles to get to next section they want). I've
been here nearly a year and a half and only first used the box that jump
starts the shelves when they won't move for the first time two weeks ago.
I've been told that we do occasionally have failures that require help from
the company.
Cordially,
Richard

Re: CDL: Compact shelving
We have compact shelving for our bound periodicals - the kind where you pull the
shelves out to get to further volumes behind the ones you see. They're sturdy
and space-saving, if unattractive. The only problem is that students sometimes
don't realize you can pull the shelves out, so they miss finding what they're
looking for. But I would say it's worked well in the open stacks for us.
