Subject: Persian and Arabic
From: Susanna Van Sant <svansant_at_umd.edu>
Colleagues,
Our School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures has proposed
new programs in Arabic Studies and Persian Studies, each leading to a
BA. Courses will be offered to teach Modern Standard Arabic, Egyptian
Colloquial Arabic and Persian. Additional courses will cover
literature, language, film and culture.
The Libraries have been asked to prepare a collection assessment
to describe 1) what we have, 2) what we'd need to get (retrospectively
and ongoing), and 3) how much funding would be needed to support these
programs.
These are new areas for us, and we lack the language skills
in-house to identify, select, acquire and process materials in these
languages.
We will certainly mention staffing implications in our
assessment, but in the meantime, what suggestions might you all have -
for us to get materials onto the shelves and for us to budget?
Approval plan vendor recommendations? Average price for books
(primarily but not exclusively literary works) in these languages?
Availability (and added cost) of catalog records?
Whatever advice you can provide or experiences you can share
would be most helpful.
If anyone would rather talk than type, I'm happy to arrange for phone
consultations.
Many thanks,
Susanna
