Assistant/Associate Dean for Collections & Scholar Services
The University of Kansas Libraries seeks a creative, energetic and experienced librarian to fill the position of Assistant/Associate Dean for Collections and Scholar Services. The Assistant/Associate Dean provides administrative leadership for collection development, preservation, special collections, archives, and scholar services.
The successful incumbent will coordinate efforts to reshape the Libraries' mix of traditional and digital resources and strengthen print and digital preservation initiatives. This individual will build on the Libraries' strong leadership role within the campus community in support of scholarly communication initiatives. S/he will provide strategic and innovative direction and oversight of expanding programs in digital scholarship, data services and intellectual property rights. The incumbent will collaborate with others in developing a campus-wide program for print and digital information management.
The Assistant/Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the Libraries. S/he works collaboratively with three other Assistant/Associate Deans and is a member of the Dean's Council and management councils in the Libraries and in Information Services.

Responsibilities:
* Provides strong and effective leadership for a team of subject specialists/department heads in collection development, digital and print preservation, digital initiatives, scholar services, special collections, archives and information management.
* Directs and manages recruitment and evaluation for library faculty and staff in collection development, preservation, special collections, archives and scholar services.
* Maintains current knowledge with all aspects of scholarly communication issues, higher education trends and research needs in the context of rapidly developing technologies.
* Serves as the Libraries' primary contact with University entities engaged in digital scholarship, research support and new degree programs.
* Provides collaborative leadership with campus Information Technology, other campus units, and consortia in coordinating and developing digital publications and electronic repositories.
* Serves as a member of the Libraries' management team, contributing to strategic planning efforts, program development and assessment, budget formulation and allocation of resources in support of the Libraries' mission.
* Administers a collection budget of more than $7 million.
* Seeks creative and collaborative funding opportunities, and fosters grant initiatives.
* Represents the Libraries within the university, and on committees and forums at the state and at the national level.
Required Qualifications:
* Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
* Minimum 3 years' experience in increasingly responsible academic or research library management positions.
* Collection development leadership experience as evidenced by oversight of a collection development program in an academic/research library.
* Knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication, information technologies, preservation, data management and higher education as evidenced by a record of scholarship, service, experience and leadership in the profession in one or more of the above areas.
* Excellence in communication skills as evidenced through review of application materials.
Desired Qualifications:
* Advanced subject degree.
* Knowledge of current trends in copyright and intellectual property issues.
* Proficiency in a language other than English.
* A record of effective collaborative efforts involving diverse faculty, library staff, students and other campus stakeholders.
* Experience with international or diversity programs.
* Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others.
Required for Associate Dean:
In addition to the requirements for Assistant Dean, for appointment as Associate Dean, the successful candidate must meet these requirements:
* 7 years of experience at the level of department head or senior management position in the library of a doctoral granting institution.
* Substantial record of scholarship.
Terms of Appointment:
Candidate must be eligible for appointment at the Librarian II rank with tenure.
Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University faculty. Librarians are evaluated annually first and foremost on the performance of professional responsibilities. In addition, librarians are expected to participate in, and are evaluated on, research, and service to the Libraries, the University, and the profession.
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
