Hi Mike,

One idea might be to use your local ILL data in combination with the
ILL Analyses in OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis service (since you
have access to it) to determine the extent of resources that aren't
currently in your collection and that your users have expressed a need
for. You can use the ILL Analyses in WCA to get a big picture across
several years and across all subjects and formats for overall need of
resources. You can drill down to focus on specific areas that need
attention and get at actual title lists (for books as well as
serials). Combine this information with your local ILL stats that may
include locally-relevant info like need expressed by different patron
types (e.g., faculty, undergrad, grad, distance ed, etc.) and by
departments. You could tie an average cost to each item based on
subject (e.g., say you identify 100 books in Chemistry that have been
requested via ILL, and you discover in your acquisitions data that the
average cost of a Chemistry books is $150, then you could set a target
amount for Chemistry books at $1500 for a given time span).

We've used WCA's ILL Analyses to help get a big picture view of where
we need to fill in gaps based on high demand from our users for both
books as well as serials. For serials, we've also been able to
identify need for backfiles from specific publishers. And we've tied
this data to local colleges/departments and patron types to help
justify increased support.

My colleague, Annette Day, and I will be speaking at the upcoming
Charleston Conference about our evaluation of the ILL Analyses module
in the WorldCat Collection Analysis service as a resource to guide
strategic collection decisions. If you're interested, we can chat at
the conference if you're going, or can send you our slides after the
conference.

Cheers,
Hilary
