POSITION: Head, Collection Development

DESCRIPTION: The Central Library at Vanderbilt University seeks an 
energetic and creative professional to serve as Head of Collection 
Development.  The position is responsible for supervising materials 
selection, collection management, and faculty liaison for the Central 
Library, which provides collections and services for faculty, graduate 
students, and undergraduates in the arts, humanities, and social 
sciences.  The Head of Collection Development allocates and monitors a 
$2.2 million materials budget and plays a leadership role in building 
and managing the Library’s extensive digital collection.  Other 
responsibilities include designing and overseeing multiple approval 
plans and recruiting, training, and supervising ten subject 
bibliographers (who also provide library instruction and reference 
service) and one library associate.  The Head participates in 
system-wide collection development decisions as a member of the Heard 
Library Committee on Collections and in the management of the Central 
Library through participation in the Central Library’s management 
team.  All professionals help shape the development of collections and 
public services in an increasingly digital environment.  The position 
reports to the Director of the Central Library.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required are a master's degree from an ALA-accredited 
program; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to 
work in a collaborative setting; and the ability to embrace a rapidly 
changing information environment.  Outstanding written and oral 
communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work 
effectively with faculty and students.  The successful candidate 
should have a minimum of five years experience in collection 
development, including experience in selecting electronic resources. 
An additional advanced degree is preferred, and supervisory and 
budgetary experience is desirable.

ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and 
colleges with an enrollment of over 11,000.  The university is served 
by The Jean and Alexander Heard Library, which has a collection of 
over 3 million volumes, a staff of 210, and a materials budget 
exceeding $9 million.  The Central Library is the largest of the eight 
libraries that comprise the Heard Library and supports undergraduate 
and graduate education in the College of Arts and Science.  The 
Central Library collection holds over 1.3 million volumes, and the 
Library employs 29 staff, including 14 professional librarians. 
Vanderbilt is a member of the Association of Research Libraries and 
SOLINET.

COMPENSATION: Salary negotiable, commensurate with experience.
