JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Collection Development Librarian
LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus
DEPARTMENT: Mabee Learning Resources Center (LRC)
SUPERVISED BY: Director of Library Services/Archivist
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Teacher)
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Student Worker
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Collection Development Librarian coordinates
the overall development of the library collection, provides reference
services, supervises library activities during temporary absence of the
Director of Library Services and fills in as needed in absence of other
librarians.
SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES:
1. Evaluate current holdings against identified standard
bibliographies and class syllabuses.
2. Recommend purchases and coordinate faculty requests for the
purchase of print, non-print materials, journals and databases.
3. Supervise the ordering of all materials.
4. Maintain records for budgeted funds related to the acquisition of
all materials.
5. Evaluate usefulness of gift materials and collections.
6. Evaluate the collection and recommend titles for weeding.
7. Provide quick reference, bibliographical guidance and responses to
complex research problems.
8. Supervise student workers as assigned.
9. Serve 10-15 hours at the reference desk and occasionally help patrons
at the circulation desk.
10. Provide information literacy instruction for classes and create
research guides.
11. Participate in assessment of library resources and services
12. Serve on university committees.
13. Share weekend/evening hours with other staff.
14. Assist patrons in use of copier, microform reader/printer and fax
machine & computers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent from ALA accredited school.
Experience and Knowledge:
1. Previous academic library experience preferred.
2. Experience with collection development policies.
3. Knowledge of reference materials and provision of reference services.
Skills and Abilities:
1. Good oral and written communication skills.
2. Ability to exhibit skillful, pleasant and tactful manner in meeting
students, staff, faculty and other visitors to the library
3. Ability to work without direct supervision.
4. Computer proficiency with programs such as Word, Excel, Access,
library automation, e.g. Sirsi.
5. Exhibit skillful, pleasant, and tactful manner in receiving
telephone calls and meeting students, employees and visitors.
6. Work independently, receiving minimum of supervision and guidance
on established procedures.
7. Able to acquire a thorough working knowledge of policies and procedures.
8. Ability to use administrative reporting channels appropriately.
9. Anticipate problem and use sound judgment and tact in handling
confidential matters.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
1. Sit at computer desk for extended periods of time.
2. Some lifting of books and pushing book carts.
3. Some standing and filing.
4. Ability to get to other campus areas of offices as needed.
5. Work in well lighted, ventilated and air conditioned office.
6. Assist patrons on other levels of the library.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee
performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present
documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their
identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE). Employee must be able and willing to travel and teach
at external campuses. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle,
have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state
driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
