All,
Over the last couple of years we've hired a few librarians who are
very new to the collection development process.
We're trying to develop a training process for this area and wondered
if anyone out there is doing something that's working well for them.
If you have any ideas, please pass them on to me.

Deborah,
We've developed a Collection Managers Manual
(http://www.library.ucsb.edu/collman/index.html) that has a section
for new collection managers. (The manual is in constant update--I'm
guessing some sections are a bit out of date, but you'll get the
idea.) We've also developed a standard training grid--who teaches
what/when--to get through the first few months. While we don't follow
that religiously, it's a good resource for checking off to make sure
we've covered the basics. It's old--I'll see if I can track down a
copy to beam to you.

All,
I received quite a few private messages asking that me to post
whatever I find out to the list re: Collection Development training.
I received this from Deb Schmidle from Cornell. They are in the
process of revising this, but she thought it might be helpful. I
certainly think so, so I'm passing this on.

"We have a program in place here at Cornell. The Collection
Development Coordinator meets with the new selector, reviews the CD
manual http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/cdmanualcontents.html)
and makes sure they are set up with training sessions with Acquisition
and other pertinent staff. "
